Discussion Questions: Library Catalogs & Databases

  1. In the library catalog, do a subject search on a world political leader, past or present. Then do a keyword search in the library catalog for the same person. Compare your results.
  2. In a general database, do a search on your topic. What facets are useful to help you narrow your results to relevant sources for your research? Which facets are not useful?
  3. Which subject specific database available through your academic library is useful in locating additional resources? How did you adjust your search statement for this database?
  4. In any database available through your academic library, do a search on your topic and select a full-text article, and e-mail it to yourself with the abstract and subject headings.
