Unit 12: Compressed Gasses and Cryogenics
68 Unit 12: Compressed Gasses, Cryogenics and Pressure Hazards
Compressed gases are gases that are at pressures greater than atmospheric pressure. They are used in many different industries and usually come in cylinders to maintain pressure. Because these gasses are under pressure that can range from 15 psi to 6000 psi (pounds per square inch), there is a significant hazard associated with handling and using these containers. They can even explode and become a rocket. It is crucial that these cylinders are handled with care.
Some gases may even be toxic, flammable or extremely cold (cryogenic gasses) and these require special handling.
