19 Unit 3: Fire Extinguisher Inspections
Fire Extinguishers should be inspected and tested by a professional on a yearly basis and have a visual inspection every month
(you do not need to hold a qualification to do a visual inspection)
Workplace Fire Extinguisher Inspection Requirements
Inspections should consider the following
- Make sure the extinguisher is in the designated place
- The extinguisher should be clearly marked with signage that indicates where it is located
- The extinguisher is easily accessible
- The pressure gage is within the green belt (useable range)
- The extinguisher is full (test by lifting or weighing)
- For wheeled extinguishers, check the wheels and cart for damage
- For non-rechargeable extinguishers, operate the “push-to-test” indicator
- Records need to be kept of the inspections including
- Month and year
- Person conducting the inspection
The records of the inspection need to be retained for at least 1 year
