Unit 2.1: Unit Conversion

Unit Conversion Example 1

You are driving down the highway between Idaho Falls and Blackfoot at 80 mph for work. Your work software wants you to input your speed as ft/ min, so you need to convert.

Write out the units you want to convert

Miles per hour  can be written as a fraction miles OVER hours

Dealing with miles first, we need to convert it to feet since they both measure distance. We are looking to cancel out miles, and the original units had it in the numerator, the value we multiply it by needs to have miles in the denominator.

Since we are converting to feet, determine how many feet are in a mile

There are 5280 ft. in 1 mile. This is written in the numerator

Next we will deal with the hours, which need to be converted into minutes since they are both a measure of time. Hours is in the denominator of the original fraction, so the multiplication value needs to be in the numerator

Determine how many minutes there are in 1 hour. In this case its 60 minutes per 1 hour.

The new fraction can be written as

Next, we can cancel the units that are both in the numerator and denominator

And we’re left with ft/min and a number

So 80 mph is = 7040 ft/min
