Unit 2.5: Percentages
Percentages
The word percent comes from the Latin “per centum” meaning “per hundred”. It is a piece of a hundred and can be written as a decimal, fraction or a percentage
So 34 out of 100 could be written as [latex]\frac{34}{100}[/latex] or 0.34 or 34%
These all mean the same thing and have the same value
To convert a percentage into a fraction, divide the percent by 100 and simplify if possible
6 % becomes [latex]\frac{6}{100}[/latex] or [latex]\frac{3}{50}[/latex]
Convert from a fraction to a percentage by multiplying by 100 when the denominator is 100
[latex]\frac{3}{100}[/latex] x [latex]\frac{100}{1}[/latex] = 3
The percentage can also be written as a decimal by moving the decimal place over 2 places
34.00 % becomes 0.34
6.00 % becomes 0.06
Convert back from a decimal to a percentage by multiplying by 100
0.05 x 100 = 5 %
