Unit 1.1: Addition
Adding Whole Numbers
Addition is the process we use to add one number to another number to increase its value.
Example: Addition
324 + 192 = ?
1. Start by writing the larger number on top with the ones, tens, hundreds (thousands, etc.) places lined up with the number below
2. Add the numbers in the ones place first (4 + 2 = 6)
3. Write the resulting number in the ones place under the line. Then move on to the 10s place. 2 + 9 = 11 but you can only have one number in the 10’s spot in your answer.
4. Write the resulting number in the 10’s place but since you can only have a number with a ones place, we need to carry the value in the 10’s place. In this example it is 1
5. Now that we only have one value in the 10s place, and we carried the 1, we can now add the 100s place
6. We need to remember to add the carried value as well as the two numbers in the 100s place
The resulting value is 5
7. We write the value into the 100s place and it gives us our final answer
So 324 + 192 = 516
Adding Negative Numbers
Adding two negative numbers together will result in a larger negative number
Adding a smaller positive number to a larger negative number will result in a smaller negative number
Adding a larger positive number to a smaller negative number will result in a smaller positive number
