Course Description

Introduction to energy terminology, functions of power generation and mechanical processes, equipment, material, power cycles, mechanical physics and systems, and principles of heat transfer and fluid flow are covered.

Course Purpose

This course provides students with an introduction to the basic concepts of energy systems through the study of units of measure, process control systems, common energy system components and configuration, fluid dynamics, thermodynamics and system operation in normal and abnormal conditions.

Course Outcomes

In actively participating and completing the assignments throughout this course, you will be able to:

  1. [CO 1]* Identify the components and variables for process control systems.
  2. [CO 2] Describe the concept of energy systems and how they are integrated.
  3. [CO 3] Recognize common energy system components.
  4. [CO 4] Identify units of measure and perform unit conversions.
  5. [CO 5] Describe the fundamental principles of fluid dynamics.
  6. [CO 6] Describe the fundamental principles of thermodynamics.
  7. [CO 7] Identify possible causes and impacts of process and equipment failures.
  8. [CO 8] List energy system fuels and configuration**
